“The Caribbean that speaks English - reef, ruins and a country you can cross in a day.”
Belize is Central America running on Caribbean time. English is the official language, the barrier reef runs the entire length of the coast, and the whole country holds fewer people than a mid-sized European city. You can wake up in a jungle lodge beside a Maya plaza and be snorkelling a coral wall by mid-afternoon.
It is also, honestly, the priciest corner of the isthmus after Costa Rica - the trade-off for small scale and easy logistics. The smart play is to split time between the Cayo district inland (caves, ruins, rivers) and one of the cayes, and to travel like locals do: chicken bus, water taxi, and no hurry whatsoever.
Chapter 01
Highlights
The Belize Barrier Reef
A 300 km UNESCO-listed coral wall with the Great Blue Hole at its heart. Snorkel Hol Chan with nurse sharks and rays, or dive Turneffe and Lighthouse atolls.
Caye Caulker
A sand-street island with no cars and one rule painted on the dock: Go Slow. The budget-friendly counterweight to upscale Ambergris Caye.
ATM cave (Actun Tunichil Muknal)
Swim and scramble into a cave the Maya used for sacrifice - calcified skeletons still in place. Guided, helmeted, and genuinely unforgettable.
Caracol and the Cayo jungle
Belize’s largest Maya city rises out of the Chiquibul forest near the Guatemalan border - pyramids taller than anything built in the country since.

Entry requirements for Belize

The detail
- Maximum stay
- up to 30 days
- Fee
- free entry
- Passport validity
- Most destinations want validity beyond your stay, and some want six months. Check yours against the return date.
- Onward travel
- Airlines may ask for a return or onward ticket at check-in.
- Health
- No mandatory vaccinations; hepatitis A and typhoid are the standard recommendations. Dengue is present year-round - repellent at dawn and dusk. Tap water is officially treated in towns but nearly everyone drinks bottled or filtered. The sun off the water is ferocious: reef-safe sunscreen is required by many operators and genuinely needed.
- Money
- The Belize dollar is pegged 2:1 to the US dollar and US cash is accepted absolutely everywhere - prices are often quoted in both, so always confirm which dollar you’re being quoted. Cards work at hotels and dive shops (often with a 3–5 % surcharge); buses, street food and market stalls are cash only. ATMs exist in every town but thin out on the southern coast - stock up before Hopkins or Punta Gorda.
No visa is needed and nothing is applied for in advance, but the free allowance is short: Belize admits visitors for 30 days at a time, the briefest in Central America, and longer stays are bought a month at a time at any immigration office. Where you see six months quoted for an American passport - and you will - that is the ceiling those paid renewals reach, not the figure the officer writes on arrival. Budget for that if you are staying - the monthly extension has been in the region of BZ$100 at the time of writing and the figure is revised from time to time, and after six months the permission becomes a different and slower process. Officers may ask for an onward ticket and for evidence of funds, the published figure being around US$75 a day, and airlines ask for the ticket more reliably than the border does. Leaving overland to Guatemala or Mexico carries a departure fee paid in cash at the border, around BZ$40 including the conservation levy, so keep some local currency rather than spending the last of it. Carry six months of passport validity. One piece of regional arithmetic makes Belize more useful than its 30 days suggest: it is NOT part of the CA-4, so arriving from Guatemala starts a fresh Belizean clock, and a few days here is the classic legal reset for anyone who has used up a Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua allowance.

Where this sits among 244 countries we have costed
Island accommodation rises 20–40 % between Christmas and Easter and drops hard in September–October, when some caye hotels close outright. Inland Cayo prices are steadier year-round. Reef-trip and dive prices barely move with the seasons - weather cancellations, not discounts, are the wet-season story.

Regions to know
5The northern cayes
Caye Caulker’s barefoot sand streets and Ambergris Caye’s upscale San Pedro - both a short boat from the reef, Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley.
Cayo district
San Ignacio is the inland base: ATM cave, Xunantunich and Caracol ruins, river canoeing and jungle lodges on the Macal River.
Southern coast - Placencia & Hopkins
Peninsula beaches, Garifuna drumming in Hopkins, and whale-shark diving off Gladden Spit in spring. The mellow alternative to the northern cayes.
Toledo & the deep south
Punta Gorda, rainforest waterfalls, cacao farms and living Maya villages - the least-visited district and the greenest.
The north - Orange Walk & Lamanai
Riverboat safaris up the New River to Lamanai’s lagoon-side temples, with crocodiles and howler monkeys as escort.
Chapter 06
Practical guide
Getting there
Philip S. W. Goldson International (BZE) outside Belize City has direct links to US hubs (Miami, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta) - from Europe count on one stop, 14–17 hours door to door. The budget classic is flying into Cancún and riding ADO buses south (8–10 h to the border, cheap and comfortable). A water taxi also crosses from Chetumal, Mexico straight to the cayes.
Getting around
The country is tiny - no internal journey needs more than half a day. Old US school buses run the main highways for pocket change; water taxis (San Pedro Belize Express, Ocean Ferry) link Belize City, Caye Caulker and San Pedro roughly hourly. Tropic Air and Maya Island Air hop between airstrips in 20-minute flights that double as scenic tours. Golf carts are the rental car of the islands.
Money & costs
The Belize dollar is pegged 2:1 to the US dollar and US cash is accepted absolutely everywhere - prices are often quoted in both, so always confirm which dollar you’re being quoted. Cards work at hotels and dive shops (often with a 3–5 % surcharge); buses, street food and market stalls are cash only. ATMs exist in every town but thin out on the southern coast - stock up before Hopkins or Punta Gorda.
Safety
Belize City drags the national statistics; the rest of the country lives at a different tempo. Standard rules: taxi after dark in the city, keep valuables off the beach while you swim, and lock valuables in dorms. On the water, pick licensed operators - the reef is windier and the boats smaller than the brochure suggests.
Health
No mandatory vaccinations; hepatitis A and typhoid are the standard recommendations. Dengue is present year-round - repellent at dawn and dusk. Tap water is officially treated in towns but nearly everyone drinks bottled or filtered. The sun off the water is ferocious: reef-safe sunscreen is required by many operators and genuinely needed.
SIM & internet
Digi (the former BTL) has the widest coverage, Smart the cheaper packages - data is pricier than elsewhere in the region, roughly €10 for 10 GB prepaid. An eSIM installed before arrival is the painless option. 4G covers the cayes and the highway corridors; the deep south and the Chiquibul are dead zones.
Chapter 07
Driving
Belize posts speeds in mph - the only country on the isthmus that does. There are no motorways; 55 mph is the open-highway maximum. Unsigned speed bumps ("sleeping policemen") guard every village: hit one at speed and the rental deposit is gone.

Frequently asked questions
Is Belize safe for travellers?
The tourist circuit - the cayes, Cayo district, Placencia, Hopkins - is relaxed and easy. The exception is Belize City, where the south side has genuine gang crime: treat the city as a transit point, take a taxi between the bus terminal and the water-taxi dock, and don’t wander at night. Petty theft exists island-side; use lockers.
When is the best time to visit Belize?
December to April is the dry season - sunny, breezy, and busiest around Christmas and Easter. September and October are the wet-season trough and the heart of hurricane season, when some island businesses close entirely. June brings the lobster-season openings, and whale sharks pass Placencia around the full moons of April to June.
How much does a day in Belize cost?
More than its neighbours: around €90 ($97) per day mid-range - €40–50 for your half of a double room, €20–25 for food, the rest for boats and reef trips. Backpackers can hold €40–45 ($43–49) on Caye Caulker with dorms and street food; a single dive or cave tour blows any daily budget, so ring-fence activity money separately.
