Driving in Bolivia

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

40 / 80 / 100 km/h · 25 / 50 / 62 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Recommended

Carry an IDP alongside the EU licence - rental agencies accept the home licence, but police checkpoints are frequent and paperwork-minded.

Blood alcohol limit

0.05% - checkpoints exist on main routes; penalties escalate sharply

Tolls

Small cash tolls (peajes) on paved intercity routes - keep small boliviano notes in the door pocket.

Headlights

Low beams at night and in fog/rain; not required by day. Many rural roads are unlit - avoid night driving entirely.

Child seats

No reliably enforced child-restraint standard - bring your own seat if travelling with small children.

Self-driving is for the experienced: unpaved altiplano routes, minimal signage, fuel stations that may refuse or surcharge foreign-plated cars, and altitude that saps engines and drivers alike. Most travellers are better served by buses, flights and tour 4x4s.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
