Driving in Cambodia

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

40 / 90 / 120 km/h · 25 / 56 / 75 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Required · Vienna 1968

Cambodia requires a Cambodian licence or a recognised IDP; many rental agreements are informal and leave you uninsured. Several provinces, including Siem Reap, have banned foreigners from renting motorbikes at various times - check locally.

Blood alcohol limit

0.05%

Tolls

The Phnom Penh–Sihanoukville expressway is tolled; National Roads are free.

Headlights

Not required by day.

Child seats

No effective legal requirement and almost no rental stock - bring your own if travelling with small children.

Self-driving is rarely worth it. A car with a driver costs little more, removes the licence and insurance problem, and comes with someone who knows which unsigned turn leads to Beng Mealea.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
