Driving in Cuba

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

50 / 90 / 100 km/h · 31 / 56 / 62 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Recommended

Home licence accepted for tourist stays; carry an IDP plus a passport copy for the frequent checkpoints and for rental paperwork.

Blood alcohol limit

Treat as zero - Cuban traffic law penalises alcohol at the wheel harshly and police checkpoints are common

Tolls

Almost none - small cash booths on the Varadero and cayo causeways; keep small notes

Headlights

Low beams at night; many local vehicles run without lights - assume nothing

Child seats

Effectively unavailable from rental agencies - bring your own if travelling with small children

The hazards are the road itself: unmarked potholes, unlit cyclists, horse carts and oxen on the Autopista Nacional. Never drive at night intercity. Fuel shortages are chronic - fill at every opportunity and carry cash for it.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
