Driving in Czech Republic

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

50 / 90 / 130 km/h · 31 / 56 / 81 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Not required

EU, UK and US licences are valid for visits.

Blood alcohol limit

0.00% - absolute zero tolerance, strictly enforced

Tolls

A motorway vignette is mandatory - bought digitally by number plate, with a 10-day option around €12. Driving a motorway without one is a substantial fine.

Headlights

Mandatory at all times, day and night, year-round.

Child seats

Mandatory under 150 cm or 36 kg.

The zero-tolerance alcohol rule is absolute and enforced with roadside testing - in a country with this beer culture, that separation is taken seriously. The digital vignette must be bought before joining the motorway, and rental cars usually have one but confirm it.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
