Driving in Dominica
The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.
Driving side

Speed limits
32 / 64 / 64 km/h · 20 / 40 / 40 mph
urban / rural / motorway
International permit (IDP)
Not required
A local visitor’s driving permit is mandatory - EC$30 / ~US$12, valid one month, issued by rental firms or the Traffic Department against your home licence.
Blood alcohol limit
0.08 % is the commonly cited figure; testing is rare - the mountain roads punish impairment far faster than the police do
Tolls
None - no toll roads
Headlights
Low beams at night and in the frequent mountain rain
Child seats
Rarely stocked by rental agencies - bring your own for small children
Limits are rarely posted and largely academic: hairpins, grades and rain cap real speeds at 30–40 km/h. Sound your horn on blind corners - locals do. There are no motorways.
