Driving in Dominican Republic

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

40 / 80 / 100 km/h · 25 / 50 / 62 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Recommended

Home licence valid for tourist stays up to 90 days; an IDP smooths police stops and some rental desks.

Blood alcohol limit

0.05 % - enforcement is weak; other drivers’ drinking is a bigger night-time hazard than checkpoints

Tolls

Cash toll booths on the main autopistas (Las Américas, del Coral, the Samaná corridor) - roughly RD$60–500 per plaza; carry pesos

Headlights

Low beams at night; many local bikes and trucks run unlit - assume nothing

Child seats

Bring your own or reserve well ahead - availability and enforcement are both patchy

Posted limits vary by road - modern autopistas run up to 100–120 km/h where signed. Driving culture is aggressive: expect overtakes on both sides, motorbikes everywhere and zero night-time margin. Never drive intercity after dark.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
