International permit (IDP)

An IDP is required alongside your home licence. Self-drive is uncommon among visitors and not recommended in Cairo.

0.00% - zero tolerance

Tolls

Tolls on the desert highways and the ring roads around Cairo.

Headlights

Not required by day; note that some Cairo drivers use them sparingly at night, which is its own hazard.

Child seats

No effective requirement or availability.

Do not drive in Cairo. Traffic is dense, lane markings are advisory and the accident rate is among the highest in the region. A car with a driver costs €40–60 a day and is the normal arrangement. Desert routes require permits in some areas and should not be attempted alone.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
