A home-country licence is accepted for tourist stays; carry an IDP plus passport for the frequent police and military checkpoints - it keeps stops short.
0.07 % - checkpoints exist; penalties include licence seizure
Modern toll plazas on the CA-5 corridor (San Pedro Sula–Tegucigalpa) - small cash amounts in lempiras, keep coins handy.
Required at night and in rain; many drivers skip them - assume unlit vehicles after dark.
Child-restraint rules are on the books but effectively unenforced - bring your own seat for small children.
Most visitors sensibly do not drive on the mainland - coaches and flights cover the circuit. If you do: daylight only between cities, watch for unmarked speed bumps and livestock, and treat checkpoint soldiers with unhurried politeness. On Roatán and Utila, scooters and golf carts are the fleet.
