Driving in Hong Kong

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Left

Speed limits

50 / 70 / 110 km/h · 31 / 43 / 68 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Recommended · Both accepted

Foreign licences are accepted for up to 12 months for visitors; an IDP is expected alongside a non-English licence.

Blood alcohol limit

0.05%

Tolls

Tolled harbour crossings and tunnels, now under a variable pricing scheme.

Headlights

Not required by day.

Child seats

Required for children under three; taxis are exempt.

Do not rent a car. Parking is scarce and expensive, the road network is complex, and the MTR plus taxis go everywhere faster. The only reason to drive is a trip into the mainland, which needs its own permits.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
