Driving in Indonesia

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Left

Speed limits

50 / 80 / 100 km/h · 31 / 50 / 62 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Required · Vienna 1968

Police on Bali run frequent checkpoints and fine foreigners riding without an IDP with a motorcycle endorsement. More importantly, riding without the correct category voids travel insurance - the most common reason claims are refused in Indonesia.

Blood alcohol limit

0.00% in practice - driving under the influence is treated as a criminal offence with no permitted threshold

Tolls

Extensive tolled expressways on Java, including the trans-Java route; electronic cards only, no cash.

Headlights

Motorcycles must run headlights at all times; cars need not by day.

Child seats

No effective legal requirement and minimal rental stock.

Hiring a car with a driver on Bali or Java costs €35–45 a day and is what most visitors should do. Traffic in south Bali is severe - a 20 km transfer can take ninety minutes.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
