Driving in Ireland

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Left

Speed limits

50 / 80 / 120 km/h · 31 / 50 / 75 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Not required

EU, UK and US licences are valid for visits.

Blood alcohol limit

0.05% (0.02% for learner and professional drivers)

Tolls

Tolls on the M50 around Dublin - barrier-free and camera-enforced, so it must be paid online by 20:00 the next day - and on several other motorways with booths.

Headlights

Not required by day.

Child seats

Mandatory under 150 cm or 36 kg.

The M50 barrier-free toll catches almost every visitor: there is no booth, and an unpaid toll becomes a fine that reaches the rental company. Rural roads are narrow with stone walls and hedges right at the edge, and the posted 80 km/h on a boreen is a limit rather than a suggestion of speed. Speed limits are in km/h in the Republic and mph in Northern Ireland.
