Driving in Jamaica

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Left

Speed limits

50 / 80 / 110 km/h · 31 / 50 / 68 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Not required

A valid foreign licence is accepted for tourist stays (up to 12 months) - no local permit needed. An IDP adds nothing except a translation if your licence is not in English.

Blood alcohol limit

0.08 % (35 µg/100 ml breath)

Tolls

Highway 2000 toll plazas on the Kingston–May Pen and Kingston–Ocho Rios legs - pay cash in JMD or with a T-Tag

Headlights

Low beams at night and in rain; no daytime requirement for cars

Child seats

Child restraints required for young children under the Road Traffic Act - rental firms supply seats on request

Drive on the left. Coastal roads are decent, interior roads potholed and narrow; overtaking culture is aggressive and route taxis stop without warning. The North–South toll highway turns the Kingston–Ocho Rios crossing into 90 minutes.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
