Roads are good and self-driving is genuinely easy here, which is unusual in the region. The King's Highway is the scenic route south and worth the extra hours. Speed cameras are numerous and fines reach the rental company. Wadi Rum needs a 4×4 and a local driver, and going in alone is neither permitted nor sensible.
