Driving in Kyrgyzstan

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

60 / 90 / 110 km/h · 37 / 56 / 68 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Required · Vienna 1968

An IDP is required with your home licence; self-drive rental exists and is popular for the mountain loops.

Blood alcohol limit

0.00% - zero tolerance

Tolls

None of consequence.

Headlights

Low beams required outside built-up areas.

Child seats

Required for young children; rental stock is limited.

Self-drive with a 4×4 is genuinely feasible here and a good way to see the country, but the mountain tracks to Song-Kul and Kel-Suu are rough, unsigned and occasionally require river fords. Do not attempt them in a saloon car, whatever the rental agent says.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
