Speed limits

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Recommended · Both accepted

Many EU licences are accepted for tourist rentals, but rental desks and police both prefer to see an IDP alongside - carry one.

Blood alcohol limit

0.05%

Tolls

The North–South Expressway and most peninsula motorways are tolled and now cashless - rentals come with a Touch 'n Go card, which you top up.

Headlights

Not required by day.

Child seats

Mandatory for children under 135 cm or age seven since 2020; rental agencies stock them on request.

Malaysia is the easiest country in Southeast Asia to self-drive - good roads, clear signage in Malay and English, disciplined motorway traffic. Borneo's interior roads are a different proposition and need a 4×4 in the wet.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
