Driving in Norway

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

50 / 80 / 110 km/h · 31 / 50 / 68 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Not required

EU, UK and US licences are valid for visits.

Blood alcohol limit

0.02% - effectively zero tolerance, with severe penalties

Tolls

Extensive automatic tolling on roads, bridges and tunnels, billed to the plate - rental companies pass the charges on with an administration fee. Some ferries are tolled the same way.

Headlights

Mandatory at all times, day and night, year-round.

Child seats

Mandatory under 135 cm; rear-facing seats are the norm for young children and required for longer than elsewhere.

Speeding fines are among the highest in the world and enforcement is heavy - 10 km/h over can cost several hundred euros. Winter tyres are required in winter conditions. Fjord roads mean long single-lane tunnels and frequent ferries; build ferry timetables into the day rather than assuming a road distance.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
