Driving in Pakistan
The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.
Driving side
Left
Speed limits
50 / 80 / 120 km/h · 31 / 50 / 75 mph
urban / rural / motorway
International permit (IDP)
Required · Both accepted
An IDP is required. Self-drive is uncommon among visitors; hired cars come with drivers, which is both cheaper and safer here.
Blood alcohol limit
0.00% - alcohol is prohibited for Muslims and heavily restricted generally
Tolls
Tolls on the motorway network (M1, M2 and others), which is genuinely good road.
Headlights
Not required by day.
Child seats
No effective requirement or rental stock.
The motorways between the big cities are excellent. The Karakoram Highway is spectacular and demanding, with landslide closures, unlit tunnels and long drops - hire a driver who knows it rather than driving it yourself.
