A road vignette (rovinieta) is mandatory on national roads, bought online or at petrol stations and registered to the plate - around €3 for a week. Separate tolls apply on a few bridges.
Mandatory outside built-up areas at all times.
Mandatory under 135 cm.
The rovinieta covers national roads, not just motorways, which catches visitors who assume it is a motorway-only vignette. The Transfăgărășan and Transalpina mountain roads are spectacular and open only from roughly July to October. Horse-drawn carts, stray dogs and unlit pedestrians make night driving on rural roads genuinely dangerous.
