Driving in Saint Lucia

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Left

Speed limits

15 / 30 / 30 mph · 24 / 48 / 48 km/h

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Not required

An IDP alone does not cover you: visitors must obtain a temporary local driving permit (around EC$54 / ~€17), issued against your home licence on the spot by rental companies or at police stations.

Blood alcohol limit

No routine breath testing - driving under the influence is an offence; treat as zero

Tolls

None

Headlights

At night; sound the horn on blind hairpins as locals do

Child seats

No effectively enforced requirement - request a seat from the rental desk

Drive on the left. Roads are steep, narrow and winding - the Castries–Soufrière run takes well over an hour for barely 50 km, and rain makes the hills slick. Limits are low and rarely posted; the road itself sets the pace.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
