Driving in Sweden

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

50 / 70 / 110 km/h · 31 / 43 / 68 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Not required

EU, UK and US licences are valid for visits.

Blood alcohol limit

0.02% - effectively zero tolerance

Tolls

Congestion charges in Stockholm and Gothenburg, plus a few bridges including the Öresund to Denmark. Charges are billed to the plate and passed on by rental firms.

Headlights

Mandatory at all times, day and night, year-round.

Child seats

Mandatory under 135 cm; rear-facing seats until age four are the strongly enforced norm.

Wildlife is the defining hazard - elk collisions are common and serious, and reindeer wander freely across roads in Lapland. Drive slowly at dawn and dusk. Winter tyres are legally required from December to March and studded tyres are normal in the north.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
