The Pamir Highway is unpaved for long sections, crosses passes above 4,000 metres and has essentially no recovery infrastructure. Fuel is scarce east of Khorog - carry jerrycans. Drivers who know the road are worth every som.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
