Driving in Trinidad and Tobago

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Left

Speed limits

50 / 80 / 100 km/h · 31 / 50 / 62 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Not required

A valid foreign licence (in English) is accepted for up to 90 days - no local permit needed for tourist stays. An IDP is only useful as a translation.

Blood alcohol limit

0.08 % (35 µg/100 ml breath) - roadside breathalysers in use

Tolls

None - highways are toll-free

Headlights

At night and in heavy rain; no daytime requirement

Child seats

Child seats required for young children - rental companies supply them; fines apply

Drive on the left. Trinidad’s highways are good but Port of Spain rush hour is genuinely heavy; the north-coast and Toco roads are slow, winding and worth it. Tobago is easy, slow driving on one coastal loop. Watch for flash flooding in the wet season.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
