Driving in Tunisia

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

50 / 90 / 110 km/h · 31 / 56 / 68 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Recommended · Geneva 1949

Tunisia recognises many national licences for short visits, but rental companies and police checks are much smoother with an IDP alongside your licence.

Blood alcohol limit

0.05% (0.5 g/l)

Tolls

The A1 and A3 motorways are tolled - cash booths, modest amounts.

Headlights

Not required by day.

Child seats

Under-10s must not travel in the front seat.

Police checkpoints are frequent and routine - slow down, stop if waved, have licence and rental papers to hand. Driving after dark outside cities is best avoided: unlit vehicles, animals and unmarked roadworks are common.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
