Driving in Turkey

The rules of the road as our desk recorded them, native unit first.

Driving side

Right

Speed limits

50 / 90 / 120 km/h · 31 / 56 / 75 mph

urban / rural / motorway

International permit (IDP)

Recommended · Both accepted

EU and most other licences are accepted for short visits; an IDP smooths rental and police stops.

Blood alcohol limit

0.05% (0.00% when towing or with passengers under a certain age)

Tolls

Motorways and the Bosphorus bridges are tolled electronically via HGS - rentals carry a transponder and bill you afterwards. There are no cash booths.

Headlights

Not required by day.

Child seats

Mandatory under 135 cm.

The HGS electronic tolling has no cash option and driving a bridge or motorway without a transponder generates a fine - confirm your rental has one. Driving standards are assertive and rural roads carry slow agricultural traffic. Distances are large: Istanbul to Cappadocia is 730 km.

Rules change - verify with an official source before you rent.
