Andorra is 468 square kilometres of high Pyrenees between France and Spain, ruled jointly by the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell — an arrangement dating to 1278 and still constitutionally in force. It has no airport and no railway; everyone arrives by road, which is the first practical thing to know.
Two things bring people: skiing, with Grandvalira the largest linked area in the Pyrenees, and shopping, since low duties make Andorra la Vella a retail town that Spanish and French visitors cross the border for. The third thing, which fewer people come for, is the summer walking — the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley is UNESCO-listed, roadless and holds glacial lakes and shepherds' huts.

The ski season from December to March is when accommodation doubles and the holiday fortnight goes further; summer is dramatically cheaper for the same rooms. April, May and November are the dead months when much of the infrastructure closes. Lift passes are fixed and cheaper than comparable Alpine areas.

Practical guide
Getting there
No airport and no railway. Direct coaches run from Barcelona and Toulouse airports and from Barcelona city, taking two and a half to three and a half hours. Driving from either side is straightforward outside winter storms, when the French Envalira pass can close and chains may be required.
Getting around
A national bus network connects the parishes cheaply and reliably along the main valleys. Ski shuttles run in season. A car helps for trailheads but parking in Andorra la Vella is difficult. The country is small enough that most walking starts within a short bus ride.

Safety
Extremely safe with very low crime. The hazards are mountain: avalanche risk off-piste in winter, fast weather changes at altitude, and the mountain roads in snow. Altitude is modest but real — the passes exceed 2,400 metres. Mountain rescue is charged, so check your insurance covers it.

SIM & internet
Not in the EU, so EU roaming does not apply and charges can be steep — this catches out visitors constantly, since phones roam onto the Andorran network in border valleys. Buy a local SIM or check your plan. Coverage is good in the valleys and patchy on the high routes.
Driving
Winter equipment — snow tyres or chains — is legally required when conditions demand and is enforced. The Envalira pass at 2,408 metres is the highest paved pass in the Pyrenees and can close in storms; the toll tunnel beneath it stays open. Customs checks on exit are routine, not exceptional.

How do I get there?
By road only. Barcelona airport is about three hours by bus or car, Toulouse around two and a half, and both have direct coach services. There is no airport and no train — the nearest station is L'Hospitalet-près-l'Andorre in France, with a bus connection. Winter road conditions can be serious on the passes.
Is it in the EU?
No. Andorra is not in the EU, not in Schengen and not in the customs union, though it uses the euro under an agreement with the EU. In practice there is no passport control on either border, but there are customs checks — duty-free allowances apply and are enforced on the way out, which is why the queues form.
Is it worth visiting in summer?
Yes, and it is much cheaper. The high trails, the Madriu valley and the lakes are excellent from June to September, lift-assisted walking opens the ridges, and hotel prices are a fraction of the ski season. It is the half of Andorra that most visitors never see.
