Andorra

A Pyrenean co-principality with the largest ski area in the region and no airport.

Capital Andorra la VellaLanguage CatalanCurrency euro (EUR)Timezone UTC+1Best season December–March (skiing) · June–September (walking)

“A Pyrenean co-principality with the largest ski area in the region and no airport.”

Andorra is 468 square kilometres of high Pyrenees between France and Spain, ruled jointly by the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell - an arrangement dating to 1278 and still constitutionally in force. It has no airport and no railway; everyone arrives by road, which is the first practical thing to know.

Two things bring people: skiing, with Grandvalira the largest linked area in the Pyrenees, and shopping, since low duties make Andorra la Vella a retail town that Spanish and French visitors cross the border for. The third thing, which fewer people come for, is the summer walking - the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley is UNESCO-listed, roadless and holds glacial lakes and shepherds' huts.

Chapter 01

Highlights

01

Grandvalira

The largest linked ski area in the Pyrenees, with over 200 kilometres of piste across Pas de la Casa, Soldeu and Encamp, and lift passes cheaper than the Alps.

02

The Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley

A UNESCO-listed glacial valley covering a tenth of the country, with no road into it - shepherds' huts, high lakes and the best walking in Andorra.

03

The Romanesque churches

Santa Coloma with its round bell tower and Sant Joan de Caselles among around forty small Romanesque churches, most from the eleventh and twelfth centuries.

04

Caldea

A thermal spa complex fed by hot springs in Escaldes, with lagoons and a glass spire that is the most visible building in the country. The standard rest day after skiing.

Passport validity
Most destinations want validity beyond your stay, and some want six months. Check yours against the return date.
Onward travel
Airlines may ask for a return or onward ticket at check-in.
Health
No vaccinations required. Healthcare is good but Andorra is not in the EU, so EHIC/GHIC does not apply - travel insurance is genuinely necessary, and medical costs here are not low. Check that winter-sports and mountain rescue are covered. Tap water is excellent.
Money
Euro, used under agreement despite Andorra not being in the EU. Cards are accepted everywhere. Note that Andorra is outside the EU VAT area, which is the basis of the shopping trade - duty-free allowances apply when leaving and customs officers do check.

Andorra asks a United States passport for nothing: no visa, no fee, no form, and no entry decision of its own. What governs the trip is the two countries on either side of it. Andorra is in neither the European Union nor the Schengen area nor the EU customs union, and it has no commercial airport, so every arrival is overland from France or Spain - which means you must be admissible to the Schengen area to reach the border and admissible again to get home. Crossing in is legally an exit from the area and driving back out is a fresh entry on the same terms as the first, so the number that matters is Schengen’s: 90 days in any rolling 180, shared across the whole twenty-nine-country Schengen area rather than granted afresh. The window rolls - count backwards 180 days from any date and add up every day you were anywhere in the area, arrival and departure days included - and a week in the mountains does not buy days back, because the crossing is not reliably recorded as an exit. The crossings are staffed on the French and Spanish side and by Andorran police on theirs: passports are looked at, nothing is stamped, and it is customs that actually stops cars, since the duty-free prices are most of the reason the car parks are full and the allowances are enforced on the way out. Since 10 April 2026 the Entry/Exit System has been fully operational, after a phased start in October 2025: your first crossing records a facial image and fingerprints, the passport is no longer stamped, and the count is now kept by a machine rather than by an officer finding the right inky page. ETIAS was announced but not required at the time of writing; check when you book, and expect to need one for the French or Spanish leg once it starts, whether or not Andorra itself appears on the published list. Your passport must be valid three months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area - on this trip the day you leave France or Spain, not the day you leave Andorra. If anyone travelling with you enters Europe on a Schengen visa rather than visa-free, check before you set off that it allows more than one entry: a single-entry visa is spent by the crossing into Andorra, and the border back is where that is found out. The euro is the currency by agreement, and EU roaming rules do not apply, so a phone connects at foreign rates in the valleys.

The ski season from December to March is when accommodation doubles and the holiday fortnight goes further; summer is dramatically cheaper for the same rooms. April, May and November are the dead months when much of the infrastructure closes. Lift passes are fixed and cheaper than comparable Alpine areas.

Regions to know

5

Andorra la Vella & Escaldes

The capital and its neighbour - the shopping streets, the Caldea thermal complex and the Romanesque Santa Coloma.

Grandvalira

The eastern ski area across Encamp, Canillo, Soldeu and Pas de la Casa, and summer lift-assisted walking above it.

Vallnord & the northwest

Pal-Arinsal and Ordino-Arcalís, plus Ordino village and the Sorteny nature park.

The Madriu valley

The roadless UNESCO valley covering a tenth of the country, with high lakes and shepherds' huts.

The southern parishes

Sant Julià de Lòria toward the Spanish border, with the tobacco museum and the quieter southern trails.

Chapter 06

Practical guide

Getting there

No airport and no railway. Direct coaches run from Barcelona and Toulouse airports and from Barcelona city, taking two and a half to three and a half hours. Driving from either side is straightforward outside winter storms, when the French Envalira pass can close and chains may be required.

Getting around

A national bus network connects the parishes cheaply and reliably along the main valleys. Ski shuttles run in season. A car helps for trailheads but parking in Andorra la Vella is difficult. The country is small enough that most walking starts within a short bus ride.

Money & costs

Euro, used under agreement despite Andorra not being in the EU. Cards are accepted everywhere. Note that Andorra is outside the EU VAT area, which is the basis of the shopping trade - duty-free allowances apply when leaving and customs officers do check.

Safety

Extremely safe with very low crime. The hazards are mountain: avalanche risk off-piste in winter, fast weather changes at altitude, and the mountain roads in snow. Altitude is modest but real - the passes exceed 2,400 metres. Mountain rescue is charged, so check your insurance covers it.

Health

No vaccinations required. Healthcare is good but Andorra is not in the EU, so EHIC/GHIC does not apply - travel insurance is genuinely necessary, and medical costs here are not low. Check that winter-sports and mountain rescue are covered. Tap water is excellent.

SIM & internet

Not in the EU, so EU roaming does not apply and charges can be steep - this catches out visitors constantly, since phones roam onto the Andorran network in border valleys. Buy a local SIM or check your plan. Coverage is good in the valleys and patchy on the high routes.

Winter equipment - snow tyres or chains - is legally required when conditions demand and is enforced. The Envalira pass at 2,408 metres is the highest paved pass in the Pyrenees and can close in storms; the toll tunnel beneath it stays open. Customs checks on exit are routine, not exceptional.

Chapter 11

Frequently asked questions

How do I get there?

By road only. Barcelona airport is about three hours by bus or car, Toulouse around two and a half, and both have direct coach services. There is no airport and no train - the nearest station is L'Hospitalet-près-l'Andorre in France, with a bus connection. Winter road conditions can be serious on the passes.

Is it in the EU?

No. Andorra is not in the EU, not in Schengen and not in the customs union, though it uses the euro under an agreement with the EU. In practice there is no passport control on either border, but there are customs checks - duty-free allowances apply and are enforced on the way out, which is why the queues form.

Is it worth visiting in summer?

Yes, and it is much cheaper. The high trails, the Madriu valley and the lakes are excellent from June to September, lift-assisted walking opens the ridges, and hotel prices are a fraction of the ski season. It is the half of Andorra that most visitors never see.
