“Mountain gorillas, terraced hills and the most orderly capital in East Africa.”

Rwanda is a country of about 26,000 square kilometres in which almost everything is uphill. The terraced hillsides are farmed to the ridgelines, Kigali is famously clean and safe, and the road network is better than anywhere else in the region. It is easy to underestimate how much this changes travel: you can be at the gorilla park headquarters two and a half hours after leaving the capital, on tarmac, without incident.

The two poles of a Rwandan trip are the Volcanoes National Park in the northwest, where habituated mountain gorilla families are tracked on foot, and the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which is not optional if you want to understand anything about the country. Between them are Nyungwe's montane rainforest with chimpanzees and a canopy walk, and Lake Kivu's quiet shoreline towns. A week is enough; the gorilla permit will dominate the budget.

Chapter 01

Highlights

01

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park

One hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes. Groups are capped at eight people, permits are limited daily and the trek can take anywhere from one to six hours each way.

02

Kigali Genocide Memorial

The resting place of more than 250,000 victims and the clearest account of 1994 you will find. Free entry with a paid audio guide; allow two to three hours and expect to need the rest of the day.

03

Nyungwe Forest

Montane rainforest in the southwest with chimpanzee tracking, thirteen primate species, over 300 bird species and a 70-metre-high canopy walkway strung across a ravine.

04

Lake Kivu

The quiet inland sea on the DRC border - Gisenyi, Kibuye and Cyangugu, with a marked cycling and hiking trail, the Congo Nile Trail, running the length of the shore.

Money
The franc is cash for small purchases, but Rwanda is unusually card- and mobile-money-friendly for the region. ATMs in Kigali and provincial capitals; carry cash for rural areas. US dollars are accepted for park fees and upmarket lodges.

Rwanda admits every nationality, and an American traveller need arrange nothing before flying: a visa is issued on arrival at Kigali and at the land borders to anybody who does not already hold one. What an American passport does not get is the free tier. Rwanda waives the fee for African Union, Commonwealth and Francophonie member states and for a short list of others; the United States is in none of them, so the 30-day single-entry visa costs US$50, payable at the counter by card or in United States dollars. The card readers at Kigali usually work, which is not something to say of every border in the region, but carry the cash anyway. Applying in advance on the government’s Irembo portal costs exactly the same and turns twenty minutes in the arrivals hall into five - it is optional, and the sites charging a premium to complete the same form are connected to nobody. If Uganda or Kenya are also on the itinerary, the East Africa Tourist Visa - US$100, 90 days, multiple entry across all three - is the better buy and must be obtained from whichever of the three you enter first, so decide before you book the first flight. Kenya has also run its own electronic travel authorisation since 2024 and how that sits beside the joint visa has moved more than once, so confirm the Kenyan leg is covered before you buy it for Kenya. A yellow fever certificate is required if you are arriving from a country where the disease is endemic. Single-use plastic bags are banned and are taken off arriving passengers at the airport, duty-free carriers included.

Lodge rates around Volcanoes National Park roughly double in the June–September dry season. The US$1,500 gorilla permit does not follow the season, with one exception: the Rwanda Development Board's low-season offer takes 30% off (US$1,050) from November to May for a traveller who also spends at least two nights in Akagera and/or Nyungwe - check it is still running when you book.

Regions to know

5

Kigali

Hilltop capital with the Genocide Memorial, a real coffee and art scene, and the country's only serious restaurant choice.

The Volcanoes (Musanze)

Gorilla and golden monkey trekking, the Virunga chain, Dian Fossey's grave at Karisoke and caves at Musanze.

Lake Kivu

Gisenyi, Kibuye and Cyangugu - beaches, islands, coffee farms and the Congo Nile Trail.

Nyungwe

Montane rainforest, chimpanzees, the canopy walkway and tea estates on the forest edge.

Akagera

Eastern savanna and wetland on the Tanzanian border - the country's Big Five park, restored with lion and rhino reintroductions.

Chapter 06

Practical guide

Getting there

Kigali International is well connected by RwandAir plus Brussels Airlines, Qatar, Turkish, Ethiopian and KLM. Overland links to Uganda (Gatuna) and Tanzania (Rusumo) are straightforward; the DRC crossing at Gisenyi/Goma depends entirely on the current security situation.

Getting around

Comfortable inter-city coaches on excellent tarmac connect all the main towns cheaply. Moto-taxis are the default in Kigali - helmets provided, fares now metered through apps. Renting a 4x4 is worth it only for Akagera.

Money & costs

The franc is cash for small purchases, but Rwanda is unusually card- and mobile-money-friendly for the region. ATMs in Kigali and provincial capitals; carry cash for rural areas. US dollars are accepted for park fees and upmarket lodges.

Safety

Low crime, visible policing and good street lighting in Kigali. Photographing government buildings, military sites and the airport is prohibited. Political discussion in public is a genuinely sensitive area.

Health

Yellow fever certificate required if arriving from an endemic country. Malaria risk is present at lower altitudes, low in Kigali and the highlands. Good private clinics in Kigali; carry evacuation insurance for the parks.

SIM & internet

MTN and Airtel; SIMs need passport registration. 4G across the country is genuinely good, including in the national parks - Rwanda's fibre backbone is the best in the region.

Chapter 11

Frequently asked questions

How much is a gorilla permit and can I get one on the day?

A permit costs US$1,500 per person for foreign non-residents, covers one hour with a family and must be booked in advance through the Rwanda Development Board or a tour operator. Daily numbers are strictly capped, so high season sells out months ahead. If the price is the obstacle, Uganda's permits are less than half as much for the same species.

Is Rwanda safe?

Very - violent crime against visitors is rare and Kigali is safer at night than most European capitals. The exception is the DRC border area around Goma, where conditions change quickly; check advisories before travelling to the far west and do not cross into North Kivu on a whim.

Are plastic bags really banned?

Yes, and it is enforced at the airport. Single-use plastic bags are confiscated on arrival, including the ones your duty-free came in. Pack fabric or paper. The same civic strictness produces Umuganda, a compulsory community clean-up on the last Saturday of each month when most businesses close until midday.
