Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Thirty-two islands, one volcano and the Caribbean’s dreamiest sailing grounds.

Capital KingstownLanguage English (Vincentian Creole)Currency East Caribbean dollar (XCD)Timezone UTC−4Best season December–April

“Thirty-two islands, one volcano and the Caribbean’s dreamiest sailing grounds.”

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is really two trips wearing one flag. The mainland, St Vincent, is the wild part: black-sand coves, rainforest waterfalls and La Soufrière, the 1,234 m volcano that erupted as recently as 2021 and whose crater hike is the country’s great land adventure. Then the Grenadines unspool southward - thirty-odd islands and cays scattered across some of the clearest sailing water in the Atlantic world.

Each island has its own temperament. Bequia, an hour’s ferry from Kingstown, balances yachtie bars with a real boatbuilding town; Mustique does barefoot privacy for rock stars; Canouan splits between fishing village and top-end resorts; and at the chain’s end the uninhabited Tobago Cays sit inside a horseshoe reef where green turtles graze metres from your mask. Hurricane Beryl battered the southern islands in 2024 - going, and spending, is part of how they rebuild.

Highlights

01

Tobago Cays Marine Park

Five uninhabited cays inside a horseshoe reef - snorkel with green turtles in the sanctuary, then eat grilled lobster off a beach barbecue run by Union Island boat crews.

02

Bequia

The Grenadines’ most liveable island: Admiralty Bay’s harbour front, model-boat workshops, Princess Margaret Beach and a sailing culture that predates the yachts.

03

La Soufrière crater hike

A half-day round trip up St Vincent’s active volcano - through rainforest and old ashfall to a crater rim reshaped by the 2021 eruption.

04

Island-hopping by ferry and sail

Local ferries and charter yachts stitch the chain together - Kingstown to Bequia to Canouan to Mayreau to Union - the Caribbean’s best low-key voyage.

Passport validity
Most destinations want validity beyond your stay, and some want six months. Check yours against the return date.
Onward travel
Airlines may ask for a return or onward ticket at check-in.
Health
No special vaccinations required; hepatitis A and typhoid are the standard recommendations, and dengue appears in the wet months. Tap water on St Vincent and Bequia is generally fine; smaller islands run on rainwater cisterns - bottled is safer there. The main hospital is in Kingstown; serious cases evacuate to Barbados or Martinique, so carry insurance with medevac cover. Reef cuts infect fast in the tropics - clean them properly.
Money
The East Caribbean dollar is pegged at EC$2.70 to the US dollar (about EC$3.1 to the euro); US dollars circulate freely, change comes in EC. Cards work in Kingstown, on Bequia and at resorts - carry cash down-chain, where beach barbecues, water taxis and park fees want EC notes. ATMs exist on St Vincent, Bequia, Canouan and Union Island; don’t count on them elsewhere.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines asks a United States passport for no visa and admits visitors for up to six months, twice what most European passports are given here. It is also one of the islands that has NOT gone digital: at the time of writing, in September 2026, there is no online arrival form, no pre-travel registration and no authorisation to buy - the arrival and departure card is paper, handed out on the aircraft or waiting in the arrivals hall. Every neighbour in this chain has introduced an electronic card between 2023 and 2026, so check the position when you book; what is certain either way is that a Vincentian entry form has never been something to pay a third party for. The period recorded here is the maximum the law allows rather than the one you will be given: the officer writes a date in the passport, usually the date of your return flight, and it is that written date you must not overstay. Immigration here asks for more than a passport: an onward or return ticket, an address for every night you are booked, and, where the officer is not satisfied, some evidence that you can pay for the stay. Those questions come at the desk rather than at the gate, and the answer that gets people turned round is that they will work it out when they arrive. Arriving by yacht is normal rather than exotic here and clears the same immigration: enter at a designated port - Kingstown, Blue Lagoon, Bequia or Union Island - before moving down the chain. CARICOM is not a Schengen. It moves goods, capital and its own skilled nationals, and it creates no common visa, no common stamp and no common arrival form for visitors, so an island-hopping trip clears immigration from scratch every time it lands. The departure and security taxes these islands levy sit inside the air fare and are not an entry fee, but keep a little local cash back anyway for ferry departures and small-island counters, where they are still sometimes collected at a desk.

Two economies: land travel on St Vincent and Bequia stays affordable year-round with a 25–40 % high-season bump (mid-December–April), while the charter-yacht and villa economy down-chain prices in US dollars and peaks hard over Christmas–New Year and Easter. September–October bring the lowest rates but thinned ferry schedules and some closures - check what is actually open before banking the discount.

Regions to know

5

St Vincent mainland

Kingstown’s market bustle, the venerable botanical gardens, Dark View Falls and the La Soufrière crater hike from the wild windward coast.

Bequia

An hour’s ferry from Kingstown: Admiralty Bay’s waterfront bars, boatbuilders, Princess Margaret Beach and the country’s easiest island rhythm.

Mustique & Canouan

Mustique rents barefoot privacy by the villa; Canouan pairs a fishing village with a vast reef and top-end resorts. Both fly-in or sail-in.

Mayreau & the Tobago Cays

The chain’s tiny heart - Mayreau’s one hill village and Salt Whistle Bay beside the marine park’s turtle-grazed reef lagoon.

Union Island

The southern gateway and kite-surfing hub, rebuilding with determination after Hurricane Beryl’s direct hit in 2024 - visiting is part of the recovery.

Chapter 06

Practical guide

Getting there

Argyle International (SVD) on St Vincent has a handful of direct US links (Miami, New York) plus regional connections; the classic route from Europe is via Barbados, hopping over on interCaribbean or SVG Air in about 40 minutes. Bequia, Mustique, Canouan and Union Island all have airstrips for island-hoppers. Many visitors simply arrive by sea - Grenadines charters out of Kingstown’s Blue Lagoon or out of Grenada are a standard way to see the country.

Getting around

Ferries are the backbone: Bequia Express and Admiral run Kingstown–Bequia several times daily (about an hour), with slower services down-chain to Canouan, Mayreau and Union Island. SVG Air and Mustique Airways cover the same ground in minutes for modest fares. On St Vincent, shared minivans fan out from Kingstown along both coasts; on the smaller islands you walk, take a water taxi or hop in an open-back pickup cab.

Money & costs

The East Caribbean dollar is pegged at EC$2.70 to the US dollar (about EC$3.1 to the euro); US dollars circulate freely, change comes in EC. Cards work in Kingstown, on Bequia and at resorts - carry cash down-chain, where beach barbecues, water taxis and park fees want EC notes. ATMs exist on St Vincent, Bequia, Canouan and Union Island; don’t count on them elsewhere.

Safety

Little troubles visitors beyond opportunistic theft - lock the guesthouse room, keep valuables off the beach and out of dinghies. On boats, follow the charter company’s weather calls without argument. La Soufrière is an active, monitored volcano: check alert levels before hiking, and go with a guide. Hurricane season deserves genuine attention here after Beryl.

SIM & internet

Digicel and Flow cover St Vincent and the larger Grenadines with usable LTE; expect dead zones between islands and on the uninhabited cays. A visitor SIM or eSIM with ~10 GB runs €15–20. Wifi is standard in guesthouses and yacht-crowd bars on Bequia and Union; assume nothing in the Tobago Cays and enjoy it.

Speed limits
20 / 40 / 40 mph · 32 / 64 / 64 km/h · urban / rural / motorway
International permit (IDP)
Not required · An IDP alone is not sufficient: visitors must buy a temporary local driving permit (around EC$100 / ~€32), issued against your home licence at the licensing office in Kingstown or arranged through rental agencies.
Blood alcohol limit
No routine breath testing - driving under the influence is an offence; treat as zero

Headlights
At night; sound the horn on blind bends as locals do
Child seats
No effectively enforced requirement - bring or request a seat

Drive on the left. St Vincent’s leeward road is narrow with sheer drops and hairpins; limits are low, rarely posted and academic on these roads. In the Grenadines you mostly won’t need a car at all - ferries, feet and water taxis do the work.

Chapter 11

Frequently asked questions

Is Saint Vincent and the Grenadines safe?

For visitors, broadly yes. The Grenadines in particular are as relaxed as the Caribbean gets; Kingstown asks for ordinary town sense after dark and care with valuables on beaches and boats. The real risks are natural - hurricane season (June–November, worst September–October, as Beryl proved in 2024) and the volcano, which is continuously monitored; heed local guidance on both.

When is the best time to visit?

December to April for dry, settled sailing weather; Vincy Mas, the national carnival, peaks in late June and early July. September and October sit at the top of hurricane season - ferry schedules and small hotels thin out in those weeks, and early-season storms can be severe, as Hurricane Beryl showed in July 2024.

How much does a day cost?

Around €125 (≈ $135) a day mid-range on land - guesthouse double, local restaurants, ferries between islands. Backpackers manage on €60 (≈ $65) on St Vincent and Bequia, where rooms and rotis stay honest. Charter sailing and Mustique villas rewrite the budget entirely: our premium level of €350 is the floor, not the ceiling, down-chain.
