Azerbaijan

Caspian oil money, mud volcanoes and villages that speak their own language.

Capital BakuLanguage AzerbaijaniCurrency Azerbaijani manat (AZN)Timezone UTC+4Best season April–June and September–October

“Caspian oil money, mud volcanoes and villages that speak their own language.”

Azerbaijan is where the Caucasus meets the Caspian and the oil money shows. Baku sets a UNESCO-listed walled old city against the Flame Towers and a Zaha Hadid cultural centre, along a seafront promenade built on petroleum revenue. It is the most polished capital in the region and the one that feels least like its neighbours.

Beyond it the country opens out unevenly. Gobustan's petroglyphs and mud volcanoes are an hour south; the Caucasus foothills at Sheki and Lahic hold silk-road towns and coppersmiths; and in the far north, Khinalug sits at 2,300 metres speaking a language unrelated to any of its neighbours. The Armenian border is closed, the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict ended in 2023, and travel there remains restricted.

Chapter 01

Highlights

01

Baku old city

The walled Icherisheher with the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, sitting directly beneath the Flame Towers - a UNESCO site inside a modern capital.

02

Gobustan

Thousands of petroglyphs on a rocky reserve an hour from Baku, alongside a field of mud volcanoes - Azerbaijan has around half of all those known on earth.

03

Sheki

A silk-road town in the Caucasus foothills with the Khan's Palace and its stained-glass shebeke windows assembled without nails or glue.

04

Khinalug

One of Europe's highest continuously inhabited villages at 2,300 metres, speaking a language of its own, reached by a mountain road from Quba.

A US passport needs a visa, and the ordinary route is the ASAN e-visa at evisa.gov.az: a single entry, 30 days, roughly US$25 all in, issued in about three working days or within hours on the urgent tariff for around twice the money. The approval is valid for 90 days from issue and the stay is counted from the day you arrive, so applying a fortnight early is sensible and applying three months early is not. Print it - the airline checks it at the gate and Azerbaijani carriers are not interested in a phone screen. Use only the gov.az domain; the agencies that sit above it in search results charge several times the fee for the same PDF. The one thing that turns a routine trip into a refusal is Nagorno-Karabakh: anyone recorded as having entered the region without Azerbaijani permission is denied entry and placed on a published list, the land border with Armenia is closed and cannot be used at all, and a stay in Armenia by itself is no obstacle.

Baku hotel rates rise sharply around the Formula 1 weekend and Novruz, and modestly through the summer. The mountain resorts at Shahdag and Tufandag have their own January–March ski peak. Regional towns are flat year-round and inexpensive. The manat's dollar peg keeps prices stable in a way that is unusual for the region.

Quba & the far north

Ganja & the centre

The second city, the Goygol alpine lake and the Naftalan crude-oil spa towns.

Chapter 06

Practical guide

Getting there

Baku Heydar Aliyev (GYD) takes direct flights from Istanbul, Moscow, Dubai, London and several European cities, with low-cost carriers increasing. Overland from Georgia is routine at Balakan or Red Bridge; the Russian and Iranian borders are open with the obvious caveats; the Armenian border is closed. The Caspian ferry from Turkmenbashi arrives at Alat, south of Baku, on no fixed schedule.

Entry formalities

ASAN e-visa printed, and a migration card issued at the border.

Getting around

Trains link Baku with Ganja and Sheki comfortably and cheaply, including overnight services. Buses and shared taxis cover everything else. Bolt and Uber operate in Baku. A rental car works well for the Caucasus foothills, but the mountain roads to Khinalug, Laza and Xinaliq need a 4×4 and are best done with a local driver. Baku has a small Soviet-era metro.

Money & costs

Cards are widely accepted in Baku and in larger towns; villages and shared taxis are cash. ATMs are common and accept foreign cards. The manat is pegged to the dollar and stable. Tipping around 10 % is normal in Baku restaurants, where a service charge is often already added.

Safety

Low crime and comfortable for visitors, including solo travellers. The constraints are political rather than criminal: avoid photographing military and government installations, be careful discussing Nagorno-Karabakh, and note that the eastern border areas and the Karabakh region carry advisories and restrictions. Landmine contamination in and around the former conflict zone is serious and ongoing. Driving standards in Baku are assertive.

Health

No vaccinations required; hepatitis A and typhoid standard. Tap water is not generally recommended for drinking. Medical facilities in Baku are reasonable and private clinics are good; regional facilities are basic. Summer heat and humidity in Baku are considerable. Insurance with evacuation cover is sensible for mountain travel.

SIM & internet

Azercell, Bakcell and Nar SIMs are cheap with passport registration. 4G coverage is good in Baku and along the main corridors, patchier in the mountains. Wifi is standard in hotels and cafés. WhatsApp is widely used and some VoIP services have been intermittently restricted.

Baku traffic is fast and the city's speed cameras are numerous and unforgiving. The mountain roads north of Quba are unpaved, steep and 4×4-only - Khinalug in particular is not a rental-car destination, and many rental agreements exclude those roads explicitly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a visa?

The ASAN e-visa is straightforward: apply online at evisa.gov.az for around US$25, get it in three working days, and it gives 30 days single entry. Apply only on the government portal, since paid intermediaries charge several times the fee for the identical document. Some nationalities also qualify for visa-free entry.

Can I visit both Armenia and Azerbaijan?

Yes, but not directly - the border is closed, so route through Georgia. Contrary to persistent rumour, an Armenian stamp does not automatically bar you from Azerbaijan, though travellers with Armenian names or evidence of visits to Nagorno-Karabakh have been refused entry or questioned at length. Anyone who has entered Karabakh without Azerbaijani permission is on a public list and will be denied entry.

Is Baku the whole trip?

It is about half of it. Baku and Gobustan take three days; Sheki, Lahic and Quba take another three or four and are a completely different country in feel. The far north and the Talysh mountains in the south are for people with more time and a hired vehicle.
