Congo-Brazzaville is routinely confused with its much larger neighbour across the river, and the two capitals face each other at the narrowest point — the only place in the world where two national capitals sit within sight of one another on opposite banks. The country is small, oil-dependent, and about two-thirds rainforest, with a northern block that is among the least-disturbed tropical forest anywhere.
Odzala-Kokoua and Nouabalé-Ndoki are the reason to come. Their bais — mineral-rich forest clearings — draw western lowland gorillas, forest elephants and bongo into the open, which is the only realistic way to watch them. The lodges are expensive and fly-in, the humidity is total, and the experience is unlike east African safari in every respect. Brazzaville itself is more relaxed than its size suggests, with the Basilique Sainte-Anne and a riverside promenade facing Kinshasa's skyline.
Highlights

Practical guide
Getting there
Brazzaville Maya-Maya and Pointe-Noire Agostinho-Neto are served by Air France, Ethiopian, Royal Air Maroc, Turkish, ASKY and Kenya Airways. The ferry from Kinshasa is the other common arrival.
Getting around
The Congo-Ocean Railway between Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire runs intermittently. The RN1 road between the two cities is paved and reasonable. Northern parks are reached by charter flight — the road north is a multi-day undertaking.

CFA franc, pegged to the euro. Cash dominates; ATMs in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire. Cards at better hotels only. Nothing at the parks.
Safety
Petty crime in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire. The Pool region south of Brazzaville saw conflict as recently as 2017 and carries advisories in places. Photography of official buildings, the port and bridges is prohibited and enforced.

How does gorilla tracking here compare with Uganda or Rwanda?
Different species — western lowland gorillas rather than mountain gorillas — and a different experience. The forest is denser and hotter, sightings are less reliable, and the bais let you watch whole groups in the open, which the mountain parks cannot offer. It is also more expensive and much harder to reach.
Can I cross to Kinshasa?
Yes, by ferry across the Pool — it is a short crossing and one of the world's odder international journeys. You need a DRC visa in advance and both sets of formalities take time. The crossing has closed during periods of tension, so check locally.
What does a park trip cost?
A lot. Odzala lodges run roughly €600–900 per person per night all-inclusive, and reaching them means a charter flight from Brazzaville. A week in the north is a five-figure trip for two. There is no budget version of this.
