Republic of the Congo

Odzala's bais, western lowland gorillas and the other Congo.

“Odzala's bais, western lowland gorillas and the other Congo.”

Congo-Brazzaville is routinely confused with its much larger neighbour across the river, and the two capitals face each other at the narrowest point - the only place in the world where two national capitals sit within sight of one another on opposite banks. The country is small, oil-dependent, and about two-thirds rainforest, with a northern block that is among the least-disturbed tropical forest anywhere.

Odzala-Kokoua and Nouabalé-Ndoki are the reason to come. Their bais - mineral-rich forest clearings - draw western lowland gorillas, forest elephants and bongo into the open, which is the only realistic way to watch them. The lodges are expensive and fly-in, the humidity is total, and the experience is unlike east African safari in every respect. Brazzaville itself is more relaxed than its size suggests, with the Basilique Sainte-Anne and a riverside promenade facing Kinshasa's skyline.

Highlights

01

Odzala-Kokoua National Park

Rainforest bais where western lowland gorillas, forest elephants and forest buffalo come into the open, watched from platforms. Gorilla tracking here follows habituated groups on foot through dense forest.

02

Nouabalé-Ndoki

UNESCO-listed and among the least-disturbed forest on earth - the Mbeli and Wali bais, chimpanzees that had reportedly never seen humans when researchers arrived, and forest elephants in numbers.

03

Brazzaville

The Basilique Sainte-Anne's green-tiled roof, the Poto-Poto painting school, the Corniche facing Kinshasa and the rapids below the city.

04

Pointe-Noire and the coast

The Atlantic port, the Diosso gorge's red cliffs north of it, and the Conkouati-Douli park where forest, savanna and coast meet.

A United States passport needs a Congolese visa obtained before travel, and the route most visitors actually complete is an application to a Congolese mission rather than anything electronic. An online application route has been published and where it is working it is the faster door, but it is not yet dependable enough to plan a journey around at the time of writing, so treat it as a bonus if it answers and the mission as the route you budget for. The fee is in the region of eighty euros and varies by nationality and by mission; it is not a published schedule. What decides whether the visa is issued is not the fee but the supporting document: Congo asks for a letter of invitation from a host in the country, or a notarised attestation of accommodation, alongside a return ticket, proof of funds and the vaccination certificate. If you are going to Odzala-Kokoua or Nouabalé-Ndoki, the lodge handles this - arranging the invitation for guests is a normal part of what they do, and it is the single most useful thing to ask for when you book. If you are going for work, your host writes it. If you are going independently for neither reason, this is the hard part and it is worth solving before you buy flights. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is a condition of entry to the Republic of the Congo for every arriving traveller old enough to be vaccinated - not only for those coming from a country where the disease circulates - and it is checked at the airport beside the passport rather than assumed. The certificate becomes valid ten days after the injection, which makes it the one requirement on this page that cannot be dealt with in the week before you fly; arrange it before you buy anything else, because the visa application asks for it too. One confusion is worth naming because it catches people every year: Brazzaville and Kinshasa face each other across the river and the ferry between them takes minutes, but they are two countries. A Congolese visa does not admit you to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and a DRC visa does not admit you here - crossing needs both, obtained separately and in advance. Photographing the port, the bridges, government buildings and anyone in uniform is prohibited and enforced.

Practical guide

Getting there

Brazzaville Maya-Maya and Pointe-Noire Agostinho-Neto are served by Air France, Ethiopian, Royal Air Maroc, Turkish, ASKY and Kenya Airways. The ferry from Kinshasa is the other common arrival.

Getting around

The Congo-Ocean Railway between Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire runs intermittently. The RN1 road between the two cities is paved and reasonable. Northern parks are reached by charter flight - the road north is a multi-day undertaking.

Money & costs

CFA franc, pegged to the euro. Cash dominates; ATMs in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire. Cards at better hotels only. Nothing at the parks.

Safety

Petty crime in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire. The Pool region south of Brazzaville saw conflict as recently as 2017 and carries advisories in places. Photography of official buildings, the port and bridges is prohibited and enforced.

Health

Yellow fever certificate compulsory for entry. Malaria year-round nationwide. Medical facilities are limited; evacuation insurance is essential, particularly for the northern parks.

SIM & internet

MTN and Airtel; SIM registration requires a passport. 4G in the two main cities; nothing across most of the north, where lodges use satellite.

Chapter 11

Frequently asked questions

How does gorilla tracking here compare with Uganda or Rwanda?

Different species - western lowland gorillas rather than mountain gorillas - and a different experience. The forest is denser and hotter, sightings are less reliable, and the bais let you watch whole groups in the open, which the mountain parks cannot offer. It is also more expensive and much harder to reach.

Can I cross to Kinshasa?

Yes, by ferry across the Pool - it is a short crossing and one of the world's odder international journeys. You need a DRC visa in advance and both sets of formalities take time. The crossing has closed during periods of tension, so check locally.

What does a park trip cost?

A lot. Odzala lodges run roughly €600–900 per person per night all-inclusive, and reaching them means a charter flight from Brazzaville. A week in the north is a five-figure trip for two. There is no budget version of this.
