Uganda
Gorillas at half the price, the source of the Nile and ten national parks.
“Gorillas at half the price, the source of the Nile and ten national parks.”
Churchill's "pearl of Africa" line is on every brochure and is annoyingly accurate. Uganda sits on the equator at altitude, which means it is green year-round and never unbearably hot, and it holds an improbable concentration of wildlife: half the world's mountain gorillas in Bwindi, chimpanzees in Kibale, tree-climbing lions in Ishasha, and the Nile forcing itself through a seven-metre gap at Murchison Falls.
The practical draw is price. A gorilla permit costs US$800 against Rwanda's US$1,500, and everything else - lodges, food, transport - is cheaper too. The trade-off is distance and road quality: Kampala to Bwindi is a full day, sometimes two, and the rains make it worse. Budget two weeks for a proper loop, or fly into Kigali and cross the border, which is what a lot of gorilla travellers now do.
Chapter 01
Highlights
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Roughly half the world's remaining mountain gorillas live in this ancient montane rainforest. Permits are US$800 and the forest earns its name - treks are steep, muddy and worth every step.
Kibale chimpanzee tracking
The highest primate density in Africa, with a habituated chimp community you can spend an hour with, or a full-day habituation experience for those who want to follow the group from nest to nest.
Murchison Falls
The Victoria Nile squeezes through a seven-metre cleft and drops 43 metres. Boat trip to the base in the afternoon, then game drives on the northern bank for giraffe, elephant and lion.
Jinja and the Nile
Grade V white water on the upper Nile, plus kayaking, bungee and quieter sunset cruises where the river leaves Lake Victoria. Two hours from Kampala and the country's adventure hub.

- Processing time
- Processing takes 2–10 days - apply with room to spare.
- Passport validity
- Most destinations want validity beyond your stay, and some want six months. Check yours against the return date.
- Onward travel
- Airlines may ask for a return or onward ticket at check-in.
- Health
- Yellow fever certificate is required for entry. Malaria risk is year-round nationwide, including Kampala. Bilharzia is present in Lake Victoria - do not swim on the shoreline. Good private hospitals in Kampala; evacuation cover is essential for the parks.
- Money
- Shilling in cash for most things. ATMs in Kampala, Entebbe and larger towns; nothing reliable at the parks, so draw before you leave. US dollars are used for park fees and permits - bring notes issued after 2013 or they may be refused.
Uganda ended its visa on arrival in 2016 and has not brought it back - the counter at Entebbe will not issue one, whatever an older guidebook says. The single-entry tourist visa is US$50, applied for in advance on the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control’s own portal, and approval usually takes between two and ten working days, so this is not an errand for the week of departure. You upload a passport photograph, a yellow fever certificate and a return ticket with the form, and you must print the approval letter and carry it: the visa itself is stamped on arrival against that letter, and an airline may ask to see it at check-in. The yellow fever certificate is compulsory for entry regardless of where you have flown from and is genuinely checked; without one you are vaccinated at the airport at your own cost. Ninety days is the standing grant on a tourist visa. If Kenya or Rwanda are also on the trip, the East Africa Tourist Visa - US$100, 90 days, multiple entry across all three - is the better buy and is applied for through the same portal, from whichever of the three you enter first; Kenya has run its own electronic travel authorisation since 2024 and how that sits beside the joint visa has moved more than once, so confirm the Kenyan leg is covered before you count on it. Apply only on the government domain: Uganda’s e-visa is among the most heavily imitated in the region and the lookalikes charge several times the fee for the same form.

Murchison and the north
The falls, the Nile delta boat trips, Ziwa rhino sanctuary and the road towards Kidepo's remote valley.
Jinja and the east
The Nile's exit from Lake Victoria, white water rafting, Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon's caldera hikes.
Chapter 06
Practical guide
Getting there
Entebbe International, 40 km from Kampala, is served by Uganda Airlines, Emirates, Qatar, Turkish, Ethiopian, Brussels Airlines and KLM. Many gorilla travellers instead fly to Kigali and cross at Katuna or Cyanika, which is much closer to Bwindi.
Getting around
Coaches on the main highways, matatu minibuses everywhere else, boda-boda motorbikes in every town. For the parks almost everyone hires a 4x4 with a driver-guide; self-drive is possible but demanding. Aerolink flies scheduled light aircraft to the park airstrips.
Money & costs
Shilling in cash for most things. ATMs in Kampala, Entebbe and larger towns; nothing reliable at the parks, so draw before you leave. US dollars are used for park fees and permits - bring notes issued after 2013 or they may be refused.
Safety
Kampala petty crime and road accidents are the everyday risks; boda-bodas cause most tourist injuries. The Karamoja region in the northeast and the DRC border districts around Rwenzori carry specific advisories - check before travelling there.
Health
Yellow fever certificate is required for entry. Malaria risk is year-round nationwide, including Kampala. Bilharzia is present in Lake Victoria - do not swim on the shoreline. Good private hospitals in Kampala; evacuation cover is essential for the parks.
SIM & internet
MTN and Airtel dominate; tourist SIMs require passport registration. 4G in towns and along highways; expect no signal in parts of Bwindi and Murchison. Social media access has been disrupted during past election periods.
Chapter 07
Driving
Left-hand traffic. Night driving outside towns is strongly discouraged - unlit trucks, potholes and livestock. Park roads need a 4x4 with real clearance in the rains.

Frequently asked questions
Uganda or Rwanda for gorillas?
Same species, same experience, different economics. Uganda's permit is US$800 versus Rwanda's US$1,500, and Ugandan lodges are cheaper - but Bwindi is a long, rough drive from Entebbe while Rwanda's park is under three hours on tarmac from Kigali. If your trip is only about gorillas and time is short, Rwanda. If you want two weeks and more wildlife for the money, Uganda.
What should I know about LGBTQ+ travel?
Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 imposes severe penalties, including life imprisonment for some offences, and it applies to visitors. Several governments advise LGBTQ+ travellers to consider the risk carefully before going. Discretion is the practical reality on the ground, and public displays of affection between same-sex partners are unsafe.
How bad are the roads?
Main highways from Kampala are tarmac and fine. Park access roads are dirt, and in the March–May and September–November rains they can slow a 200-kilometre leg to six hours. Domestic flights from Entebbe to Kihihi, Kasese and Pakuba cost a few hundred euros and buy back whole days.
